Checked 3 November 2026. Most texts we made appear ourselves and copied from the screen; the rest are quoted from Google’s Help pages or from users’ posts, and each row says which. We translated nothing.

Abstract message cards, one marked with a warning triangle, beside a map pin.

“We’re having trouble finding those locations”

Where you see it: Google My Maps. Importing a spreadsheet into a layer (we reproduced it with a Google Sheet), right after you pick the location columns.

What it means: My Maps couldn’t find places for the column you picked. We got it with made-up addresses; the fix guide covers checking the column choice and the addresses.

Fix it: My Maps import failed, section “We’re having trouble finding those locations”

“Anonymous uploads are not allowed”

Where you see it: Google My Maps. During a My Maps import, according to users’ reports.

What it means: Google doesn’t explain this message, and it didn’t appear for us on a normally signed-in account. The fix guide walks through the account and browser checks to try.

“This route includes a ferry”

Where you see it: Google Maps. On the route card for driving directions that use a car ferry.

What it means: Not an error: the suggested route uses a ferry crossing. You can avoid ferries in the route options, or check the ferry’s own timetable before you go.

“Your encrypted data is locked on this device”

Where you see it: Google Maps Timeline (Android). Opening Timeline on a phone where its encrypted backup can’t be unlocked.

What it means: Your Timeline backup is encrypted and this device can’t unlock it; the message points you to a device you’ve recently used to sign in to your Google Account. Read the fix guide before deleting anything: deleting backups doesn’t recover the data.

The full English message, as one user quoted it on Google’s Help Community: “Your encrypted data is locked on this device. For security reasons, you can no longer access your encrypted data on this device. Try again using a device you’ve recently used to sign in to your Google Account.”

Google’s Help page quotes only the first sentence, and we haven’t confirmed that the app shows the same wording in each language. Capital letters follow the Help page in each language. One Italian user quoted the rest of the message on Google’s Help Community: “Per motivi di sicurezza, non puoi più accedere ai tuoi dati criptati con questo dispositivo. Riprova con un dispositivo che hai usato di recente per accedere al tuo account google”.

Fix it: Turn off or fix Google Maps Timeline, section “If an Android backup is locked”

“You are currently offline” in Google Earth on Android

Where you see it: Google Earth app (Android). A bar at the bottom of the Earth app when the phone has no connection.

What it means: The app has no internet connection (in our test, airplane mode was on). Reconnect, then reopen Earth.

“Unable to reach Google Earth servers” on iPhone or iPad

Where you see it: Google Earth app (iPhone or iPad). Reported by a user of the Google Earth app on iOS when it couldn’t connect.

What it means: Earth couldn’t reach Google’s servers and is using settings saved earlier, so some features may be limited.

The Android app showed a different message in our test (above). We haven’t found this message in other languages yet; checking it needs an iPhone or iPad.

Fix it: Google Earth blurry or not loading, section “Does ‘cannot connect to server’ mean Earth is down?”

How we collected these

We made the My Maps column message appear by importing a sheet with made-up addresses, the ferry notice by asking for driving directions from Helsingør to Helsingborg, and the Earth message by opening the Google Earth Android app in airplane mode, switching the interface language each time. The Timeline message comes from Google’s own Help page in each language, which quotes only its first sentence; we haven’t confirmed the app’s wording in each language. “Anonymous uploads are not allowed” and the iPhone Earth message come from users’ posts, because neither appeared for us. Some machine translations of these messages circulate online but don’t appear on any Google page, so we left those languages out.
